Navajo have completely yellow gasters, Myrmecocystus mexicanus have some black coloration on them.

Actually, both M. navajo and M. mexicanus queens can range from light brown to pale yellow. The workers are mostly all yellow. Gasters may vary depending on what they have eaten.

From my experience, M. navajo queens are smaller than M. mexicanus queens. Aside from that, most other unassisted visual traits seem to be useless in determining species.

Which means you need a microscope and loads of practice.
I find the size difference to be pretty obvious.
