One of the Pogonomyrmex rugosus queens I caught from my most recent trip have a dead Solenopsis xyloni minor worker stuck to its leg. It has had it since I came home and has not seemed to bother the queen at all, I think that once she gets workers they will remove it though. It looks really cool how it seemed to try to be hunting her, then just died while grasping on.

One of the Pogonomyrmex rugosus queens I caught on my last trip has a dead Solenopsis xyloni minor worker on her leg. It is very cool, because I sure cannot think how it dies just grasping onto her leg, no physical damage to it, other than the fact it has dried and withered up, so she may have laid her leg on the hot ground and overheated it? Anyway, it doesn't seem to bother her mobility. I am pretty sure once she gets workers, they will take it off her, it is just an interesting sight.

Hah, that's pretty cool. I had Pogonomyrmex before with heads of other Pogonomyrmex workers stuck to their legs.

Hey did you fill the hole back in that you dug out near Joshua Tree? I never saw any hole when I was there the other night picking up my traps. I didn't walk around a whole lot though, just went a few hundred feet from the road.

Another one seems to have some kind of mud looking substance or something around/ appearing to be coming out of the joints of her legs, also not affecting her mobility... I keep her isolated from the others in case its a parasite or fungus of some sort.

Yes I filled it back up, why? There were already a few other holes however, so I think there was already someone there trying to get themselves a couple Acromyrmex versicolor.

I was just wondering why I never saw a hole haha. Yeah, there were small holes here and there, and we dug a few. My buckets left a little bit of a hole, which I plan to fill and smooth off the next time I'm there. I hate screwing the place all up.

That dead ant on the leg is amazing. Do you find yourself hoping that it just stays forever? Would make your queen the most unique in the world.

Yes, I myself will leave it, what the workers decide to do with it when grooming her, is a different story.

Yes they will very much want their queen to be the most unique queen in the world... I will be sad if they take it off...
