Hey everyone, so I have this colony of Amblyopone Australis. I think that's what they are. And the so called queen laid some eggs and hasn't laid any more since. All the eggs have been eaten. That was about 2 weeks ago. I also did some research on these ants and they have a gamergate. Which is a worker that can lay eggs I believe. Although there is one ant in the colony bigger than the rest. Would that be the queen ? How would one encourage them to lay eggs. I really want this colony to succeed as this is the biggest size ant I have.

What type of food are you providing? How about the humidity levels?

 

I always did best with amblyopone and stigmatomma with small mealworms. And they love their humidity above 70%

I provide them with flys and basically any insect I find. I don't know what the humidity levels are they are in a test tube setup with a outworld. What did the queen look like ? Is she only just bigger than the workers? Photos will be up soon.

Photos aren't very great they've ripped the cotton so they are sort of hiding.
Also I have put them just in a test tube for now so they aren't connected to the outworld.

It does look like you have a larger one there. it should be the queen but you need a better image for confirmation.

do you have water reservoir behind that cotton?

Have they been eating what you have been giving them?

I wouldn't keep them inside a test tube, don't you have anything else? They are fighting the entrance plug cotton or the reservoir (if exists) cotton?

Yes there is water behind the cotton.
I have given them sugar water and they seem to drink that.
I don't really have anything else to put them in I could make a small formicarium?
Yes they are ripping the water reservoir cotton.
Also the so called queen used to go foraging in the outworld are these queens semi claustral?

Yes they are semi claustral, but it is not expected queens to go out after first workers eclode. I have never seen that in any semi c species.

i fed mine a almost dead Geophilomorpha she gladly ate it, then laid some eggs

We have a colony of Amblyopone australis and a few queens. We mostly feed them with wingless fruit flies and other very small insects. They can be quite picky and difficult to raise.

Our queens continue to leave the nest and forage after even after the first workers eclose. If you're having difficulty getting your queen only colony up and going you can always brood boost some pupae from a wild colony if possible.

 

I believe they do not eat sugars and only consume proteins. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Alright, but last time I checked they were all gone the pupae and all that.

I don't have any wingless fruit flys here I could order some up, so do they like small insects rather than a fly like I've been feeding them?

Yea quite weird.
Also there was 2 larvae in the test tube from when I collected them and now they are not here. Did they eat them? What would of caused that

It doesent look much like my ants. Is my colony even amblyopone australis? Should I do a I'D thread?
