I am about to get a Myrmecocystus yuma colony from dspdrew, and I need to be prepared. I might need some experienced help, so listen up! I need a formicaria that can house repletes for Myrmecocystus spp. My problem is, which one? Now, I might need your help to find me a formicaria. Should I use...

  

A. AC Hybrid Nest

 

B. AC Omni Nest

 

C. AC Omni Nest Vertical

 

D. THA Formicaria Type 1(specify in comments below)

 

E. THA Formicaria Type 2(specify in comments below)

I have no experience yet in keeping ants (so its strange I even feel compelled to reply) but if I was going to keep something in the genus Myrmecocystus I would want somethings with a vaulted chamber so the repletes can hang nicely. So I would want something from THA for that. For some reason I picture the repletes having trouble hanging from acrylic.

I'm not hating on AC but the nests that they sell are shallowish and not easy for repletes to hang. I would do one of the spacious THA products

Yes, repletes need something they can hang from. Something like an omni nest would not work for Myrmecocystus.

I would suggest Tarheel Ants. They sell a nest that's sort of like a chamber, which they could hang onto much easier than acrylic.

+1 to Tarheelants. I personally am in too early of development to really offer anything, but THA has some great formicaria. The Hearth, Pinnacle, and other open-space chamber style formicarium would be awesome for them. You could possibly get something like a Fortress or Casita, and in the order notes let Mack know it is for honey pots, then I'm sure he will make it right.

I know Kelly, and even though he makes some cool stuff, I don't know of anything he makes that would be suitable for Honeypot ants.

I have had experience with all the nests. DO NOT get the ants canada omni nest for honeypots. I had them in there (vertical) and it was no good.

You can ask THA to see if he can make the chambers large enough for the ants to hang. That would be fine for them and I'm pretty sure he can do it.

 

Otherwise build your own nest.
