Been a very good day. It's been cool and humid with precipitation which must have set the elates off their rockers. Weather forecast is for rain tomorrow so looking forward to that. I have caught 4 queens. 3 of them are the same species as the smaller one James IDed as iridomyrmex. After chasing down iridomyrmex, I settled down in front of my computer when this little lady fluttered in and landed on the screen. I just so happened to have some test tubes sitting on my desk so I scooped her up.

1. Location of collection: East Ipswich
2. Date of collection: 22-10-2016
3. Habitat of collection: A computer monitor
4. Length (from head to gaster): 2.5-3 mm (yep, she is tiny)
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: In the light, she appears light brown with a stripy guster. Smoothish texture.
6. Distinguishing characteristics: Has not shed her wings yet
7. Distinguishing behavior: Attracted to light from monitors. Could possibly be nocturnal??
8. Nest description: No nest present

I will endeavour to get a better pic later after I have her settled down in her test tube setup.

Pictures of the underside of an ant aren't very useful.

If you've enjoyed using my expertise and identifications, please do not create undue ecological risk by releasing your ants. The environment which we keep our pet insects is alien and oftentimes unsanitary, so ensure that wild populations stay safe by giving your ants the best care you can manage for the rest of their lives, as we must do with any other pet.

Exotic ants are for those who think that vibrant diversity is something you need to pay money to see. It is illegal to transport live ants across state lines.

Black lives still matter.
