Hi all.
I wanted to share my first attempt at a homemade outworld for my Dorymyrmex bicolor.
It was built in a large glass vase. It is mostly made out of grout and sand. The nesting area came from dspdrew when I adopted the colony (thanks!). It can be completely removed if needed. The nest is also hydrated from below with a straw to add more water. The entrance to the nest is actually the fake plant in the middle, and they have already started pilling up sand to form a ant hill.
That is a live cactus inside, but it can be easily removed if it starts causing problems.
I knew it was time to give my colony a new area to explore, because I spotted them planning a breakout!
For several days I saw a scouting party diligently trying to get past the cotton keeping them in the nest area. So I began building the outworld.
Sure enough, while the grout was drying overnight the ants squeezed past the cotton and made it out into the wild. Luckily I noticed and was able to save the adventurous scouts, only 1 casualty due to falling to a spider's web.
I want to keep my ants happy and healthy, let me know if there is anything I am missing or need to change,
Thanks for reading!
