Ok time for me to rant a little bit as it has been a while. Photographs in many cases are an integral part of a post. They are an absolute necessity if you are posting to beg for an Id, so please, please PLEASE when posting an image rather than just posting a link to the image, put the actual image in your post. I for one very rarely will click on a link to an outside site to view an image, the instant I see a link to an image I am done with that post and I suspect there are others here that feel the same. By doing posting images by way of outside links you can be depriving yourself of valuable input.

I know of several threads that were made on "how to post pictures into posts"

http://www.formicult...to-post-photos/

http://www.formicult...e-walk-through/

My favorite method is just using Photobucket, and using the IMG code that it gives you, it shows right in the post and is usually nice and big [I think it's recomended to "size" your pictures accordingly, esp. good idea to remove dead space on images as well, no point in having a whole sidewalk slab when you only really need the queen/ ants in the picture]

Crystals made a really nice tutorial on it here:

http://www.formicult...sting-pictures/

Hope that at least gives you some ideas.

I see I'm not the only one. I blame Facebook. Like Dermy said, there are threads telling exactly how to properly post pictures. There are actually threads telling how to do many of the things asked about time and time again. It is important to read the pinned topics.

I love journal posts, but I simply do not read journals that do not have pictures. In the early and mid 2000's digital cameras were expensive and crappy unless you spent a ton. Now pretty much anything that runs android will have a camera capable of taking decent enough photos either unaided or with the help of a magnifying glass. A serviceable camera is basic ant keeping equipment in 2016.

Is it really that hard to post pics? It's 2016!

There are countless places you can go online to create an account and upload images for free. I use imgur.com (it is free and super easy to link images onto forums).

The problem is not uploading images to image hosts; it's using the image tag and properly embedding them in the post.

Right, IMGUR automatically gives you the proper code and tags for forums on each image.

But like me, some people are just starting out, and do not have any digital cameras that could take decent macro pictures.  I am trying to research digital cameras, but can't afford much.   Do you have any recommendations?  I don't know anything about what I should look for yet.

I found this one at Amazon.com   https://www.amazon.c...A3HIHADV23VGU1 it's cheap but not sure it would work to take pictures of ants.

Even the crappiest camera will take acceptable pictures if you scotch tape a $10 loupe to the front

https://www.amazon.c...&keywords=loupe

Used that method with a bottom of the line crap grade camera from 2006 for several years to take pictures of about this level of quality:

PICT0233.jpg

PICT0457.jpg

PICT0366.jpg

None of these are very good, but they're good enough for an ID to at least Genus level and even species level with some measurements, location, and luck.

Point is, even the cheapest smart phone these days comes with a camera better than what I used to take those pictures. If you're not willing to try to make do with what you already have on hand, which given that it's 2016 you almost surely have some kind of device with a camera that could reasonably be augmented with some sort of magnification, why should anyone be willing to try to help you ID your species?
