I have some questions about liquid ant feeders like this ...

• Can I use store-bought nectar that has preservatives?
• Is sugar water an equal substitute?
• Do they eventually need to be cleaned/changed, or do they tend to run dry before then?
• Do the wicks need to be changed every so often due to mold/bacteria?
• What sort of maintenance do nectar dispensers require?

honestly, I use Galileo feeders (Byformica) right now plus some of the wicking feeders but the Pogonomyrmex chew thru my fibers.  I change them when they are empty or low which is usually every other week.  you can see the Galileo feeders on Amazon just search for Byformica.

I think I have my answer.  Yes, some store bought nectar (maybe all?) has preservatives.  Yes, you still need to change the contents regularly regardless of what liquid you use.  Yes, you can use sugar water and probably should instead of nectar since who knows what impact preservatives might have.
