I'm excited to get started in this hobby, I've been wondering if I should buy a formicarium first, or try to find a queen first.
My brother lives in northern CO, he has a bunch of huge mounds around his house from what I suspect to be red harvester ants. Is there any chance of me finding a queen at this point and time of the year? If not, what and should I be looking for. I would also be interested if anyone has any links to places that may sell queen ants in Colorado.

Welcome. I'm in Firestone and another Colorado anter, Zero, lives in Broomfield. You are right in being able to find pogonomyrmex out here. There. The hills are all over in "those open fields" that I've found things very easily this year. In fact too easily. Either way, always glad to see another Colorado anter join.

Thanks everyone. I am going to be picking up a colony sometime this week. I will probably be doing a DIY formicarium.

Naaaah....You're right there with me. I'm taking my sweet time assembling that..... ...its now beginning to be hibernation time and I'm still trying to get them out of the test tube. ............

New to ants from Colorado myself. I'm on the Westerns Slope - Grand Junction to be exact.
We are a little late in the year, but still hoping for a little bit of luck!

Where the heck was everyone 4 months ago?!? Zero had Pogonomyrmex's and I've had more tets than I knew what to do with!

Dang! I was indeed late! haha.
Well, maybe in a few months I'll try my luck finding a queen. I picked up a queen today, she has about 13 workers. (Tetramorium sp. E)
I got them from a guy named Ryan from GAN.

I saw him on the GAN, but I'm not driving 4 1/2 hours over the passes for an ant. I've serched many places online and even contact CMU's bug guy, can't seem to find anyone else on the western slope that's into this.
