Yeah, I've been watching the weather and it's very far form a "huge storm"... maybe huge for the area covered. Problem is first, there is hardly any rain being produced by this "storm" at all. Second, it might be too late for any Honeypot ants except maybe M. yuma. I know Acromyrmex will fly this late, but they are only in certain areas. It's really been a pretty pathetic and sad anting season this year here.
If any areas accumulate enough rain, I'll probably go check them out, but so far it doesn't look like it's going to happen. I think it might be possible to get flights with a little less rain, if the rain continues for a long period of time. I think over a longer period of time, the rain will have more of a chance to soak into the ground further than a 15 minute downpour. I think when it pours rain, the majority of it just flows across the ground into the low lying areas. I could be wrong, but I think their flights might be triggered when the moisture reaches a certain depth. It's also a lot cooler and cloudy out there too now, so that will also keep it from evaporating too quickly. I guess we'll see how this last pathetic excuse for a storm this summer turns out.
