You should start and journal. Also, most ants are that way (because then they don't have to worry about spinning there cocoons and if they have enough resources to).

Over the past couple years, I think we've established that the only ants that can survive a full on South Dakota winter in a garage are Camponotus.

Do you have to hibernate this species, and is one missed hibernation still okay?
Queens I keep:

Unknown queen ant sp.
1 parasitic Formica queen!

I think this is a species that requires hibernation every year, but if not they do need it at least the first year. They generally won't lay until after hibernations. The posts above made that quite clear as well. Just be careful about it.
