Location: O'Neill Regional Park, Orange County, California.
Habitat: Coastal sage scrub foothills. Nested in the ground in what looked like a single entrance nest.
Coloration, hue and pattern: Dark red head and thorax, black gaster.
Length: 4.5mm - 6.5mm.
Distinguishing characteristics: Polymorphic, Very fast moving at times.
These ants were foraging all around the nest in large numbers around noon, but a little later in the day, it looked like they were all back in the nest, with maybe one still roaming around outside.
