1. Location of collection:                    Walking along rocky trail

 

2. Date of collection:                            8-27-2016 around 4pm

3. Habitat of collection:                       Granite quarry, heavily rocky area, surrounded by woods. Several types of Lasius in this area

 

4. Length (from head to gaster):         ~9mm  

 

5. Color, hue, pattern and texture:      black body, slight yellow/brown to legs

 

One of the few species we saw fly today, Lasius of some sort, L. Alienus? or a parasitic?

Lasius (Lasius) sp. (niger-group, not a social parasite). Probably one of the late-flying Lasius alienus, but pictures of the head, showing off the teeth on the mandibles and the antennal scapes are what would give us definitive clues. I've heard musings from some of the pros that the August-September Lasius alienus might be the European variety.

Not sure without taking her out of the tube I'll be able to do much better than these.  She's also a bit clumsy so not griping the sides well.  See if she makes it.  Considering the hundreds I saw flying in 2 hours, and I found just her... tells you the odds here
