went to big bear last week and no single there. sorry for not replying on time.Any p.californicus queens still available?

 

All sold, but have a few left that I'm going to rear to a colony. They are in poly setups.

Polygyny appears to be region specific. A few years ago I tried it with P. californicus from one part of SoCal and it didn't work.

 

This season, collected a bunch from the canyons near Sunland, and they appear to be doing great. We'll see once they get workers.

Polygynous Pogonomyrmex subnitidus

 

I know you all love polygynous species and queen only sales, so here they are. These flew yesterday. Collected a good amount just because you all keep asking.

 

P. subnitidus are similar to P. californicus, but not as common, are a tad larger, and have spines on the back of their thorax. Aside from that, they are hard to tell apart. The ones found here are polygynous and can have lots of queens. Have a mature colony of these with 8 queens. 

 

$20 for three queens. Comes in collection container.

 

PM and I can show you how to setup their founding chamber. They are easier than P. californicus.

Camponotus fragilis 

 

Just got back from a tiring but fun anting excursion in Yucca Valley and found tons of C. fragilis. There were so many I stopped collecting after the first hour. Normally wouldn't sell these as queen only, but this season has been good. This is one of my favorites species.

 

• Does not require hibernation
• Queens have low mortality rate during founding stage
• Develops faster than other Camponotus
• Beautiful bright yellow
• Very easy to rear, just your basic test tube setup. No sand or substrate needed
• Unlike some other species (Pheidole, Formica), they are easy to get past the first year

Myrmecocystus navajo

 

Wasn't going to put these up, but decided to sale most of them since I'm running out of space. Single queen!

 

• These do much better than Myrmecocystus mexicanus in a test tube setup. The most important thing is to add sand. This makes them settle and also helps brood spin their cocoons.
• Have reared these in the past and they are not as difficult as M. mexicanus
• Lower mortality rate than Myrmecocystus mexicanus, but not as bullet proof as Camponotus.
• Once you get over ten workers, move them to a nest where they can hang, like a Tar Heel Ants Mini Hearth

Yes, but only a few left and they are now $15 more each because they all have brood at the larva or pupae stage and are in a test tube setup. So 3 for $75.

All of them are in test tube setups except the Pogonomyrmex which is in a large bin with multiple test tubes. But yeah, none are in collection containers now. They would die in a week in those containers unless you kept watering it. It's why I try to sell them all early on, to save the time of tubing a million of them.
