Apart from hijacking this thread more or less, Lasius niger is not native to North America and occurs in isolated populations across the continent. I'm not aware of any populations around the Greater Vancouver area.
I think you might be referring to Lasius alienus, quite common around most of BC. If you are still not sure you're welcomed to start an ID thread in the ID requests subforum.
