While pulling into my parking spot at work I noticed hoards of Tetramorium covering a cement parking block. I realized before even getting out of the car that it was a huge nuptial flight. I didn't even park the car fully in the spot before I hopped out and started to film them. Here's some of the footage I gathered:

I haven't seen Tetramorium fly in years, probably over a decade. Despite them being so common, I usually fail to see them fly year after year. Probably because they fly really early in the morning...for instance this flight was in full swing when I pulled up at 5:50 am local time. They continued until about 6:30 am then began winding down a bit. Weather conditions at the time were 65 degrees with 40 % ish humidity ... no clouds and light wind ... and no rainfall for a week prior. But, the spot where the nest was regularly gets doused with water from the sprinkler system.

This is why I have to become a morning person.

If you've enjoyed using my expertise and identifications, please do not create undue ecological risk by releasing your ants. The environment which we keep our pet insects is alien and oftentimes unsanitary, so ensure that wild populations stay safe by giving your ants the best care you can manage for the rest of their lives, as we must do with any other pet.

Exotic ants are for those who think that vibrant diversity is something you need to pay money to see. It is illegal to transport live ants across state lines.

Black lives still matter.

Early mornings have their plus side! But I typically sleep in when I can, so work is the only reason I'm up when the sun is hah.

Why not do what I used to do: go to bed at like 7pm wake up at like 3am and then just stay awake boom problem solved!

WeatherAnt: Those queens are bigger then what I thought Tetramorium queens are :o [I don't have any here to relate to ]

Check out how big the males are! There are plenty of them in the video ... but they're only slightly smaller than the queens (tiny heads)!

Who never noticed! I guess they don't need very big brains for what they are about to do anyway
