Queens I got yesterday - Merida Yucatan, June 12, 2016

Hi, I got these two queens yesterday, the first one I'm pretty sure is a Camponotus, but I'm not sure about the specific sp. It's black and it's very big (like 2cm).

The second one I guess it's a leaf cutter ant. I found her inside my home. It's brown and the size is like 1.5cm.

Try to report your measurements as precisely as possible, as they are important.

The first queen is Camponotus, of which the diversity in that area is rather high. I wouldn't be confident in making an identification.

Queen two looks like Acromyrmex, of which the two likely possibilities are A. octospinosus and A. echinatior. You might have to try to wait for workers.

I hope somebody having more experience with ants from Central America can help you.

If you've enjoyed using my expertise and identifications, please do not create undue ecological risk by releasing your ants. The environment which we keep our pet insects is alien and oftentimes unsanitary, so ensure that wild populations stay safe by giving your ants the best care you can manage for the rest of their lives, as we must do with any other pet.

Exotic ants are for those who think that vibrant diversity is something you need to pay money to see. It is illegal to transport live ants across state lines.
