My name is Jason. I have never kept an ant colony with a queen before, although I made many, many attempts as a child. I keep various other exotic pets. Poison dart frogs, tarantulas, etc. My son recently discovered the AntsCanada videos on YouTube and is totally over the moon about making and keeping a formicarium. he actually managed to catch a mated queen last Spring, but he accidentally killed her by jostling her setup. We have ventured out a few times unsuccessfully in the last week for a queen. Hopefully we can find a local here willing to sell a queen or small colony!

If you're in the lower area of Georgia then we have some species in common. If it's storming up there like it is down here in Florida then be on the look out when all this rain ends. It's going to get bananas!

Talked to the fellow at antsCanada and he said he was going to put me in touch with his Georgia people.

 

We searched for queens all weekend and found nothing. So, I took the kids to White Water today (a local water park with slides and such). We're sitting in line, and an alate lands on my daughter's shoulder! As we were putting it in a water bottle, we noticed another one on the ground with only one wing. We snatched it too. They're both in test tubes now, and the intact one has already removed her wings. I hope that's a good sign.

This time of year people are posting pics of their new queens.  I've seen some neat ideas for queen hunting on there!

 

I find that it helps to say "tiny wasp" in my head when I'm about to walk from point a to point b.  Scan the ground both inside and outside as you go about your day, looking for the basic shape of a tiny wasp.  I've caught several that way, though I get a lot of strange looks from people.

Same here...looking for a Georgia seller of queen ants to get started.

I've had no luck finding a queen on my own, but still looking and reading.
