Update 9-16-2020

I'm own to just three colonies from the queens i got this year. The largest has about eight workers. I have this colony in a little experimental setup I made with a piece of rotted pine.

 

This is when I first made it.

You can see how much wood they have dug out of it. They have been dumping it all in the back.

I'm not sure if the moisture is right or not. They had some brood at first, but I don't see any now. They have also lost a few workers.

These tend to like rather dry habitats from observing them in the wild, maybe the humidity could be too high?


Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Update 5-5-2021

The three colonies eventually died off, leaving just one colony of a queen and one worker, which I got rid of.

 

I just found a bunch more queens a few days ago in Mount Baldy, CA.
