I was hiking on Mt St Helen's on 18/05/2016 and found these guys on top of several feet of snow. They seemed to be hanging out on the darker patches of snow (its an alge that lives on the snow) and there is a picture of thier snow tunnel, they either built it huge or it has been open for a while. The tunnel cluster in the photo was ~10cm accross, and the ants are ~10mm. I could clearly see ants in the tunnel but they don't show up well in the picture. These guys were pretty lively for it being about 5 deg C and them sitting right on the snow. mostly just though this was pretty cool. Curious if this is a well known behavior or not. I can sent better quality pics and much more precise location data if anyone wants it.
