Looking for a ant related gift for an 11yo girl whom is into ant stuff. I was thinking something under 50 dollars. Maybe one of the those usb microscopes. Anyone have any ideas or have used a microscope to view and photograph ants? Any other suggestions?

IMHO of course.

I think the absolute best gift you could get a young person who is interested in insects would be a blacklight! You don't have to get anything too fancy...just a CFL blacklight bulb and a white sheet will draw in a pretty respectable amount of insects on a warm night.

Others might suggest a Panera gift card.  They can use the cup afterwards to make a Panera Cup Formicarium.  That, or a clear food storage container from Wal-Mart.

Not quite a microscope... but I may have indulged on a couple of these displays recently:

Pretty humbling how much they dwarf the native camponotus queen...

That would probably work...but it does require a computer to use it. If you get something like that make sure you grab them a hand lens or jewelers loupe for using outside/in the field!

A jeweler's loop is an excellent addition. I'm thinking a black light a cheap microscope and a jewelry loop. The formicariums I have covered.

IMHO of course.
