Solenopsis molesta is the Thief ant. I don't know too much about them, but I'm pretty sure no one thinks of them as "fire ants". I never seen them called that anyway.

I had the impression he meant the common names.

 

And quite a few of Solenopsis "common names" do seem to include "Fire ant".

 

I don't find any of their stings painful though. Its mostly annoying because they itch a lot, more than they hurt. But, that doesn't really relate to the thread too much.

To add to the list Myrmica rubra is known as the European fire ant and Myrmica specoides has been sometimes called the impressive fire ant.

When you're a regular person who doesn't care about ants except to keep them away from you, all red ants large enough not to escape notice are fire ants. In Nevada I learned that Pogonomyrmex, with their large and very noticeable mounds, are all fire ants.

Or as my Dad so eloquently put it, "It is a red ant.  What else do you need to know?"

All species of Solenopsis, subgenus Solenopsis are Fire Ants (more than 20 species, how many ???, there are many sibling and cryptic species....). All other Solenopsis species are Thief Ants.

 

Here in Europe Myrmica aren't known as Fire Ants........

from what i heard/read it's because of the sting....
