We threw this on the CNC tonight.

What do you think?

Hydration is via the cotton in the middle on the formicarium fed via a plastic vial inserted in the side of the formicarium.

I think that would work great. Is that vinyl tubing between the cotton and the wood?

Yes, its there so the cotton doesn't make contact with the wood. Otherwise the wood would absorb the water too quickly.

Yeah exactly. If you had a constant water supply, the wood would end up saturated without it.

Needs a decent reservoir. Cotten that size dries quickly

Reservoir vial is inside the formicarium inserted via a hole in the side. The plastic vial has a hole drilled through it in the top and the vinyl tube and cotton sit inside it. The cotton acts as a wick drawing the water up. :)

Ah, so it does have a constant water supply. That's nice.

Very nice design.  That should work perfectly for Camponotus.  I used a somewhat similar concept once, but made out of glass.

One suggestion would be to drill an entrance hole in the side.  Plug it with cotton for now, but once she has workers, you could just put a piece of vinyl in the hole leading to a small foraging area.

Camponotus queens rarely chew through an entire cotton ball, I only saw it once with half of a cotton ball.

A larger colony running out of room is a different story.  :D

If you wanted, you could include a few pictures and a link back to this thread in the thread showing various examples of founding setups - http://www.formicult...ounding-queens/

You should definitely post all these pictures on the formicarium picture thread.
