This is the ant I found I am fairly sure it is a Queen.
I live in Calgary Alberta.
The Queen is fairly shiny and smooth.
Ant is all black.
It is chilling in my test tube set up is not doing really anything.
I found it around 4 to 6 ish.
There was no other ants the same size but there where some the same shape and colour and texture.
I found it in my garden turning the soil.
This is my first time doing this so I don’t know all the details I need to tell.

Judging by this image, it's Lasius umbratus.

Many of the images seem to have legs that are too short, additionally, from some angles the head is a lot smaller in relation (excluding that one)

also got another that looks the same from the same spot. pics soon! also the first one laid four eggs!! so know I know its a queen at least. thanks for all the feedback

The first Queen has laid four eggs but does not seem interested in them and is not that near them. Is that normal?

also I don't think it is a Lasius umbratus because it is to long. it is 10 mm when the L. umbratus is 5 to 6 mm.

is it a formica neogagate?

or a lasius niger?
