So i was out walking my 2 dogs, also looking for ants as you do, and i stumbled apon something remarkable. I found an oak tree and the bottom 50cm or so was literally covered in ants. I couldn't see the bark as there were so many. I am in the UK so does anybody have any clue as to wat this is and what species they are. They look like Lasius niger but they look different in a way i can't quite put my finger on. There was no brood and, after much looking and disappointment, no Queen. Any ideas? I have never seen this before. No pictures as of yet. I will see if it is still there and will get some pictures in the next few days.

I don't think it's Nuptial flight time in the UK yet for anything, so maybe just a very large ant colony with lots of activity?

Definatly not a nuptial flight. Possibly just a lot of activity. They were not hunting or anything.

No fighting present at all. Just sort of chilling out.

Could they have been sunbathing like these Pogonomyrmex subnitidus I saw on a trail a year go?
