We are planning on (hopefully) moving this year, and one thing that didn't cross our mind was check our plants for potential non-native ants. Most of our plants (if we move where we plan to) will go to my uncle down south.
Well, on our porch mom noticed a colony of Pheidole megacephala had moved into one her plant pots. It had two queens (I kept one for my current colony of them, I didn't see the second till we already killed them), a TON of workers and a lot of soldiers. If you didn't see the journal, some Pheidole megacephala was brought in from new plants (pretty sure that is where they are from, cause I noticed where they set the plants on top of the ground is where the Pheidole megacephala were. They also brought in a bunch of Solenopsis invicta, but a lot of those got killed off by Argentine ants.) for the expansion to the apartment complex.
Well that colony that was in our plant pot is now dead. Last thing we want is to spread Pheidole megacephala around, since it would likely end up to my Uncle's place, that would be quite a distance for them to go and then they'd be all over the place. And even if we keep the plants, we still don't want to spread any non-native ant to a new area.
So we'll be making sure each of our plants doesn't have any ants at all in them, including Brachymyrmex or anything else.
Not something I or my parents even thought about checking for...so this is just a friendly reminder to always check for invasive ants (or any other ant really) before transporting plants.
