Hi guys, I am just starting out with the hobby of ant keeping and with my research I have a lot of questions that I thought could be answered by the community! What would you suggest when looking for queen ants, such as time of day, temperature, location (under lights, large open areas, ect.), and even any "strategies" while looking? Is there any species of ants that are considered easy, and is there any species that I should refrain from in the general area of New Orleans? I have become keen of Tetramorium, but while looking around my neighborhood multiple times, I only found 1 instance of a colony besides the vast amounts of Solenopsis colonies and I'm wondering if they are scarce or I'm just not looking hard enough. Also, I only have airconditioned rooms in my house and I was wondering how I should set a heating pad onto the nest. I heard that mold was a problem especially when there is ample space in a nest (as ants use it for waste disposal). Do I have to block parts off of the nest to prevent this problem until the colony can grow into it? Or can I just leave the nest alone? Sorry for all the newbie questions, anything would be of much help! Thanks!
