Very nice pictures of them!

Is the outworld container with grout/plaster base poured at the bottom?

Yes. 1/8 inch of Hydrostone. Anymore than that, and it will crack the container.

Update 7-19-2015

This colony has shrunk down to about 27 workers. The weird thing is I don't really see any dead workers in the foraging container. I did kind of neglected them for about a month, so I don't know if that had anything to do with the die off; it still doesn't explain where they would have all gone, they couldn't possibly get out.

It also looks like the brood still hasn't grown one bit.

They either ate the de as d workers, or they escaped... that's all I could think of. Very beautiful ants.

Update 1-17-2016

The colony just continues to shrink, and is now down to only 14 workers.

A couple days ago I put them into hibernation in my new "hibernation cabinet".

Edit: The colony really did not need hibernation. I misidentified them at first and didn't realize they were a desert species. The high desert can get quite cold in the winter, but not enough to warrant hibernation I don't think.

Update 4-4-2016

I took this colony out of hibernation last week, and luckily they still have all 14 workers alive and well. They have a few larvae, but it doesn't look like there are any new eggs in there yet.

Update 8-22-2016

This colony has been doing poorly for a long time. Now the queen finally died, leaving only five workers behind.
