Location:  O'Neill Regional Park, Orange County, California.
Habitat:  Oak forest.
Coloration, hue and pattern:  Dark red head, brownish red thorax, brownish yellow legs and front half of gaster, and black rear half of gaster.
Length:  10mm.
 
I caught this Camponotus essigi queen in Southern California, May 3rd 2013, climbing up a tree trunk, shortly after dark on a very hot day.

She started laying eggs the next day, and now has five of them.

All five eggs are now larvae, and one of them is very large. I think it's possible she might have eaten some of her first eggs, and those smaller larvae are not from the original batch. It also looks like she laid one more egg not too long ago.

I found another one of these queens on 3-30-2018 at Chaney Trail in Altadena, California.

Not C. hyatti. Never use coloring as the main criteria for IDing. Found at Chaney Trail two years ago, same spot Drew found his last year.

I know colour isn’t the main factor for ID. Just when I saw them, I first thought they looked like C . Hyatti, but C.Essigi are completely different. The video made it look like C.Hyatti.
