I am unfamilar with Australian ants, but it looks like it is a neat species, whatever it is.

 

Look at that low wide head, almost like an Atta species.

The first thing come to my mind is also weaver ant. Then it also look like Myrmecocystus Mexicanus, which I saw in one of Drew's journals. However both species are not in NSW, AUS. Anyway, I will leave this question to the experts.

Reminds me of Aphaenogaster. Maybe Aphaenogaster longiceps? Idk
