Why do ants always climb upwards?

Anyone else noticed that if you keep an ant (or any insect for that matter) in something slender-y (i.e a test tube,cylinder container etc) and turn it upward, even if the exit is at the bottom they still tend to climb upwards. Anyone know why they do that?

If you fell in a hole, and there were no other tunnels at the bottom, wouldn't you climb up as well?  :D

 

I would probably climb out even if there were additional tunnels to explore...
