Why does it seem like so many of the ant keepers on this site live in California? I know of only one or two people who live in the eastern United States that keep ants.

Currently Keeping:
Trachymyrmex septentrionalis

Pheidole pilifera

Forelius sp. (Monogynous, bicolored) "Midwestern Forelius"
Crematogaster cerasi

Pheidole bicarinata

Aphaenogaster rudis

Camponotus chromaiodes

Formica sp. (microgena species)

Nylanderia cf. arenivega

Haha, I think it originally was because of how many journals I had mentioning California species of ants, which caused a lot of their Google searches to give results pointing to this forum, and then of course the more California members we got, the more it perpetuated. Probably the same reason some of the other groups have a disproportionately high number of ant keepers from the northeast.

More people are from the East Coast than you know here. I am from Maryland, for one. But yeah, there are a lot of SoCal people here. People do call this Caliculture. I know that some people don't post their locations.


Species I keep:

 

1 Lasius cf. Neoniger 30 workers

1 Camponotus sp. 15 workers

20 Tetramorium SpE 30 workers

1 T. Sessile 200 workers

I think it would be Ant Farm Yuku. But the AntsCanada Forum is growing, too.

I hate Yuku but I would like to trade ants with people in my area.

It has to do with the legal issues and not wanting to support something of dubious legality and environmental hazard.

So would you say that moving Honeypot ants from Arizona to the Northwest, or the east coast is hazardous to the environment?

No it is more a matter of "we don't know for sure and we don't want to spend the money to find out" so they enforce a blanket rule. Sort of a just in case and what if scenario.

Isn't this the exact same tired and discredited argument Republicans in Congress use to say climate change doesn't deserve attention—or doesn't even exist?

 

Because a miniscule minority of the 12,000+ species of ants cause ecological damage outside their native range, the entire group of organisms must therefore be restricted without exception?
