Caught this beauty yesterday, but have been having serious trouble identifying. Only match I've come across is L. emarginatus, which unless I just discovered a new North American branch, can't be right. I also don't know of many species flying at this time, so could be a pre-flight? Identifying features include a reddish-brown thorax, brown gaster, brown head, and reddish-brown legs. I believe she also might have a mite on her?

Are you on PC or mobile? You can upload images on PC (or by selecting full version at the bottom of mobile) by clicking the 'More Reply Options' in the bottom right of your reply box. Then, under your post, you can find a section entitled 'Attach Files' where you can 'Choose File' from your computer to upload. Finally 'Attach This File' to the post and 'Add to Post' (this button is located to the right of the image you attached) to upload to your post. Hope this helps!

Based on your description and the current nuptial flights, I would recommend looking into Prenolepis imparis and compare images of your queen to that species. Good luck!

Ah, preno makes sense! Wasn't sure since the ones I've caught previously have been a much lighter morph, but yeah I definitely see it. Funny how similar they look to lasius eh?

Yeah, they are really similar in looks and habitat but could not be more different in behavior. Good luck with the queen and I hope to see a journal about them someday in the future!
