Since anting season is coming up and I'll have to make some more nests for my future ants (when I catch them of course) I have come up with a nest idea, and I want to know if anyone thinks it will work. It is a big acrylic plate that is about 1 inch deep, and it has a smaller acrylic plate, which is about 1.5 inches deep, resting inside of it. The smaller one will be filled with dry, white sand and some test tubes, which are laying on top of the sand, for the ants to nest in. The larger plate will be filled with water as escape prevention. since the ants cannot swim, they will not be able to escape. If I make this formicarium then I will most likely house some Pogonomyrmex occidentalis in it.

Por Amor Ant Shop has a similar idea with a moat/water barrier but the thing is raised up and with an additional wall that you can choose to add or not (the wall comes in the package anyway), the wall can be coated with fluon or some other ant barrier to double the protection. The purpose is also like yours which is just a tubs and tubes setup without the tub

This is how it looks and basically it is raised on a tripod, they said that you can use this with regular plates or something else that can retain water

Currently keeping:

1x Formica subsericea, 20+ workers + a decently sized brood pile (35-40)

1x Crematogaster cerasi 3 workers with brood (been going all winter)
