Found in San Antonio Texas inside a extremely decaying log that was very moist
They definitely collect at the moistest areas of the enclosure I believe I got the queen and brood also think there might be fungus or something they keep carrying pieces of what looks like grass laden fras is this possibly a type of fungus farming ant?

is this possibly a type of fungus farming ant?

 

Some kind of Cyphomyrmex.

I second Cyphomyrmex sp., and yes, they are fungus growers.

Keeping:

Tetramorium immigrans

Formica cf. pallidefulva, cf. incerta, cf. argentea

Formica cf. aserva, cf. subintegra

Pogonomyrmex occidentalis

Pheidole bicarinata

Myrmica sp.

Lasius neoniger, brevicornis

Some kind of Cyphomyrmex.


That is what I was thinking rimosus they have these piles of small orangish granules that I thought where eggs but they are all in different shapes I think this is there yeast fungus ? Does any one have experience with this species? I’ll take better photos when I get home they finally started to move out of the dirt into the nest I made

The queen looks so similar it’s so hard to find her and when I do she’s gone instantly lol

Yup, that seems to be the yeast that they grow. There should be a couple useful Cyphomyrmex journals on the forum that you could check out. Wishing you the best of luck, as they seem like some pretty cool ants.

It is so hard to get the light. And the camara to focus on these guys I think it’s the color of them the camara has a really hard time picking up this matt color of there’s? But I think this is a queen I have confirmed there are at least 2 but I aware iv seen a third. But they move a lot and become one solid block of ants when they huddle u can’t see an individual lol

My guess would be cyphomyrmex rimosus.

Yes! Also they gathered all the yeast fungus together and there is much more then I thought! Also I breed roachs and meal worms for reptile food and I took some frass and they grabbed all the roach frass right away!
