Are you able to buy/sell solonopsis in california?

Just for the future, are you able to but/sell solenopsis species in Cali? They are invasive, so I was wondering if I would be able to but them sometime in the future or if it's illegal to spread them to other places.

And many Carnivorous plants such as: Dionea muscipula (fly trap), Sarracenia x 'Fiona' ( American Pitcher plant), Nepenthese ventrata (Tropical Pitcher plant), and Pinguicula agnata x emarginata (Butterwort) (show off your plants here)

You can't sell Solenopsis invicta, geminata, richteri, or saevissima in California but xyloni amblychila aurea and the thief ants are okay.

xyloni are still amazing, ridiculous fast growing and aggressive. invicta, geminata, and richteri can be overwhelming for some people, in my opinion xyloni is the perfect balance. Wish I could get my hands on some.

geminata richteri and saevissima don't live in California either way.

Solenopsis invicta can be sold and transported only within the quarantine zones in California. The several native species (5 S. geminata-group spp., 2 S. fugax-group spp., ~9+ S. molesta-group spp., ~3-5 S. pygmaea-group spp.) can be sold and transported through the entire state. If you find S. invicta outside of quarantine zones, such as these Inaturalist observations, report it to the CDFA.

But on Formiculture does the fire ant rule apply in the quarantine zone?

ok thanks. I've also seen that it is hard to get your hands on xyloni

I see people selling them here for 10 dollars and they usually stay up for a while, not sure if they are rare in the wild though.

Definitely not a rare species, at least in SoCal.

They are by no means difficult to get and are quite common throughout the market.

There have to be some colonies of Solenopsis in the molesta species complex in your area, as they are very common even though you might not notice them at first. You could also find populations of Solenopsis xyloni in NorCal, likely through iNaturalist observations.

I second this. I'm in socal and had never seen any fire ants around my house, but if I left a blacklight on at night I would find hundreds of solenopsis queens wandering around and even more I would find in my pool during the day. You might not realize just how many are in your area. I'm not sure the exact species but fire ant queens are very easy to obtain during summer flights. 

 

Edit: I say blacklight but I really just meant the LED light we have for our backyard.
