I think any food coloring will work fine as long as you do not put in too much. A drop would probably be fine.

“You’ll survive” -wise man.
Currently keeping:
Brachymyrmex patagonicus

Solenopsis invicta

Crematogaster sp.

My black carpenter ant colony LOVES dye in their water, I don't know why but the drink it even faster then normal. I get a mason jar or small cup and fill it about 1/4 full and put one drop in. If it is too dark try adding more water.

Edit: Do you mean food dye brand or from an antkeeping supplier?

I use Watkins Assorted Food Coloring, no artificial coloring, however many have not had issues with artificial. I just decided try it out. It's not as vibrant as artificial. Perhaps others can chime in on the brand of food grade food coloring they may use but they all should pretty much be the same.

Wow I didn't know dying it was even a thing! I guess that makes sense though as it's easier to see, looks more natural, and also looks cool when you look at the ants' full gasters. I should definitely try dying it blue...that would look very interesting.

Currently raising:

Myrmica Rubra (1 queen +  ~5 workers)

Lasius Niger (single queen + ~90+ workers)

Lasius Neoniger (two single queen + brood)

Formica spp. (Queen [likely parasitic, needs brood])

Also keeping a friend's tetramorium immigrans for the foreseeable future. Thanks CoffeBlock!

it would be neat if someone had a non-toxic fluorescing color then you could angle a weak UV light at them and have little glowbugs lol
