My myrmecocystus deplisis won't eat anything, including humming bird nectar, ant jelly, or honey. what else can i try?


 

And many Carnivorous plants such as: Dionea muscipula (fly trap), Sarracenia x 'Fiona' ( American Pitcher plant), Nepenthese ventrata (Tropical Pitcher plant), and Pinguicula agnata x emarginata (Butterwort) (show off your plants here)

Are they a new colony? You need to give more information.

I got them last week on wednesday, and usually the humming bird nectar disapears overnight, but i think that's because it evaporates, and i've seen nothing near a repleat.

How many workers do they have? Because they could be refusing to be fed because they are still being fed by the queen with her muscle and brain soup.

Maybe you should try feeding them something else like a fly or mealworm and see if they accept it; try feeding them a lot of different foods and see which ones they accept.

Get a liquid feeder like the ones ByFormica makes. They'll keep the liquid from evaporating. You mentioned there's nothing near a repleat. Also be aware that small colonies don't forage often and don't need to eat much at all. They may be eating when you're not looking. I always count on not being able to observe my small colonies' feeding. It's a defense mechanism; if a small colony is too bold and obvious foraging, all the nanitics could fall to predators.

Yeah the queen uses part of her brain to feed to the workers and herself because once the workers arrive she won't need to know how to take care of the brood so she won't need that part of her brain.

Myrmecocystus deplisis may be different, but my understanding of founding queens is that they use the energy and protein from their bodies, especially their now surplus wing muscles, to produce infertile eggs which they feed to their first larvae.

I read it in a book I got from the library but I may be wrong about this. Also, isn't the brain part of their body? And once broken down it would probably be a good protein source.

I have read some misleading things in books. Like for example: that some types of males grow without wings and then they walk off and find an ant colony, mate with an unmated queen there, and then go find another colony to mate with. I'm pretty sure that that one is not true.

Yeah very misleading most males do infact have wings and fly off to mate.
