My first Polyrhachis phryne from the Glasshouse Mountains, Qld. I had to be quick as this ant disappeared as soon as the photo was taken.
Great shot!

Is it light reflection or are this species legs banded? It looks like there’s alternate banding of brown and off-white.

I think it is light reflection. I still haven't got a decent diffuser for my flash which causes a lot of reflection. Here is another photo which might help.
Today I saw a Polyrhachis hookeri and a Rhytidoponera metallica hanging around the same tree. I quite often see these two ants in the same area. I can never get great photos of them because they are quite shiny.
These are all Polyrhachis hookeri. If you are really lucky sometimes you can find a purple coloured variation of P. hookeri. I have found two and both were in the same patch of bushland in Landsborough, Qld. I saw my first purple P. hookeri about 11 months ago and today I saw my second. I still couldn't get a decent photo of it though.
WOW! that's so cool! Polyrhachis hookeri is already on my list of most wanted and to just think there are two colours out there is like an added excitement.

I think I saw a purple P. hookeri once. Also a black Polyrhachis ammon and a gold Rhytidoponera metallica. If I ever get a hookeri colony I'd like to see the green-purple ratio.

A gorgeous Spider Ant that I saw this morning in Dularcha N.P. in Qld. I think it is Leptomyrmex rufipes. Always a thrill to find these ants in the bush. Hopefully one day I will find a colony.
Its also amazing your able to find them! Amazing Picture again. I love it

Really? They have sprung out all around my house and I have to be careful they don't crawl on me and sting. They weren't here as much until the rains hit and then they all started to come out.
And just so readers know. They don't make sand hills, they have nest entrances like the black crazy ants. You really have to look for them in some cases.

I haven't seen any in my area.
I saw this hairy looking ant this morning in Dularcha N.P. in Qld. It is a Calomyrmex albopilosus and I think they look incfedible.
wow, just wow
I had a good find yesterday morning. I came across a small colony of Mesoponera australis. I had never heard of these ants before but they are a new favourite now. I was disappointed in how the photos came out so I will go back in a few weeks and hopefully get better shots and try and film the colony.
The first picture is a Neivamyrmex Texanus queen my friend and I found.
The second picture is of my Polyergus Mexicanus I used to keep.
And the third picture is from a few months ago but it is my Liometopum Apiculatum.
