Took a few pictures of queens this weekend, including what is now probably my favorite picture I've taken!

Lasius neoniger

Formica cf. argentea

As far as I know, these are the only DSLR pictures of a living argentea queen!

And here's my favorite, which is also of the argentea queen.

Mine is the second Formica pic.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Santa brought me a Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO for a Nikon F-mount but we’ve still got 18” of snow on the ground. Here’s some of my first shots. Unfortunately no new species but I can’t wait to get this outside in the spring! I’ve had this C. pennsylvanicus colony since May 2018. They’ve just been out 10 days and she’s back to laying!

Phenomenal, ConcordAntman! You should share those with Mack Pridgen. He loves getting customer photos.

I sent some shots on to Mack yesterday. This past Tuesday ended up being moving day. I moved a C. pennsylvanicus colony I founded last June out of a test tube setup and into their permanent formicarium. Just after literally “dropping in”

Twenty-four hours later their queen was happily laying, the workers were about, and they seemed moved in!

I was grabbing some shots on my C. penns today as well. Working on getting better at snapping pics.

a brood tender next to mama

I like how this one actually focused on the brood below, the ants appear to be just floating above. none of the way my pics come out is intentional

20210227 191151

got a couple fatty larva in there looking like I might see my first cocoons soon since coming out of hibernation.

not terrible for a $35 macro lens clipped to my cell phone and windows auto enhance, have not reached the potential yet for this setup.

I love scrolling back through this thread, inspiring.

Almost a week in her new digs, the Queen Mother seems at home. I found her in June 2020 and she now has 15 workers and a good sized brood pile.
