I didn’t follow them to find out but I wonder if these two were helping this pupa eclose? You can almost see the adult form within.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.
However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:
Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

AntsDakota, big colony! I’m trying to judge scale. Are those workers about 1/3rd the size of a C. pennsylvanicus worker?

Thanks! It actually has 5 queens. However, the workers are more like around half the size of a pennsylvanicus workers, around 3-4 mm. Around a mm larger than neoniger or americanus.

Wish i had a colony of those gals.

Myrmica egg pile:
There's a queen a few mm to the left of the eggs, and another a few mm below her, half in the picture. This colony has a total of 18 queens. Read more about them here: Adak's Ant Journal

Here's a trick: bright sunlight does miracles for photography!
Anyways, here's a Camponotus pennsylvanicus colony I found under a rock a week or so ago:
Unfortunately, queen always likes to hide in the dark, so I had to block the light to even hope to get a shot of her at all.
