1. Location (on a map) of collection: Arcadia, Florida
2. Date of collection: 7/22/24, 6:30 am local time.
3. Habitat of collection: Residential, suburb, many lines of mature trees. 78 F/ 95% Humidity. Climbing house wall towards porch light.
4. Length (from head to gaster): ~15 mm
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: Dark, reddish brown with black gaster. Few, long, obviously distinguishable hairs on gaster.
6. Distinguishing characteristics: Wide head (seems equal to length)
7. Distinguishing behavior: Fast moving
8. Nest description: N/A
9. Nuptial flight time and date: Unsure, likely last night or early this morning. Prior evening had strong thunderstorm and over 3/4 “ rain between 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm.

I have a strip of mature trees (found a mature nest last year cleaning it up under and within a rotting log, including alates) in my backyard at the property line with lots of shade and decomposing branches.

I am leaning towards a C. floridanus based on prior local observations, behavior, and size.

She’s in a test tube with a small drop of sugar water in an aluminum foil “cup”.

Would like confirmation (if possible from photos).

Most likely floridanus because most of the other bicolor species are smaller than 15mm

Thank you everyone. So far, this is the first one I’ve seen this season.

Last year (late July 2023), I was chasing one around a parking lot with a plastic cup after a movie.

I look back on it now and appreciate my wife accepting the stares from others that were heading back to their cars. I can only imagine them thinking what kind of weirdo I was and why this woman was with me. After 10 minutes, it went under a car and I lost track of it.

Happy hunting!
