1. Location (on a map) of collection: Salt Lake City
2. Date of collection: June 25, 2024 — around 6 - 7pm
3. Habitat of collection: Suburban sidewalk
4. Length (from head to gaster): 7cm
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: Black
6. Distinguishing characteristics: I don't know enough about ants yet
7. Distinguishing behavior: Same

9. Nuptial flight time and date: Didn't see flying, but on this same evening I had also seen a few dead alates (don't know male vs female) on the sidewalks

 

This is my first time finding a queen ant and trying this out, would really appreciate any help/advice! In the couple of weeks since finding her I have seen a few eggs in the test tube, but as of now there doesn't seem to be a cohesive brood/egg cluster so I'm not sure if she's fertile or not.

7mm, not cm! Looks like Tetramorium immigrans to me.

To me it looks like some  sort of Phediole

Or Tetras

My guess was Tetramorium immigrans, thanks for the help! If she doesn't have a cluster of eggs at this point, is it likely she hasn't mated?

Oops yes 7mm not 7cm.

 

My guess was Tetramorium immigrans, thanks for the help! If she doesn't have a cluster of eggs at this point, is it likely she hasn't mated?

 

Could be as shedding wings doesn't always mean they are fertile. But sometimes queens just take time to lay eggs. In this case though she might not be fertile.

Keep her in a dark spot with little disturbance. Check on her weekly and keep it weekly so she can spend as much time in the dark as possible (it’s up to you on when you want to check her but I would recommend a week or more) as this happened to my C. subbarbatus queen as well. She kept laying eggs and eating them but I was sure she was fertile. I left her in the dark for 2 weeks straight and she laid back up. All hope is not lost if you use the correct method. Good luck!

Keeping:

1x - C. chromaiodes (colony)                                       1x - C. subbarbatus (founding)  

1x - F. subsericea (founding)                                        1x - T. sessile (mega colony)
