I wonder why they are so big, but don't look to get that much bigger workers than other Crematogaster queens I've had that were much smaller. And scanning through that journal, colony size looks about the same as other Crematogaster. I imagine their must be some benefit to the size. Because this queen could easily be passed as a large Camponotus queen or another large ant species. I wonder if its some type of response against Argentine ants/other invasive ants, or if that is just how they are for some reason.
Well, hopefully she is fertile. I'll check before I leave on Friday to see if there are eggs, and then again on Tuesday when I get back. It seems finding fertile queens in a pool can be hit/miss depending on the area.
