Two individuals collected.

1. Victoria BC
2. June 9
3. Under the bark of fallen trees on the roadside in a Heavily forested area
4. 17-18mm
5. Appears to be solid black to t
6. Distinguishing characteristics: 
7. Both were very active and pulled on the cotton after capturing, but are not easily disturbed after sitting overnight.
8. N/A

9. Nuptial flight time and date unknown

yea, I would guess C. modoc with antlover.

Camponotus Vicinus, for sure. Red legs give it away. I would say Modoc except for the legs. And they are polygynous, which explains why you caught two. Did you catch them together? They definitely nest in forests, so I'm pretty sure it's one of those.

I  would have to disagree @stubyvast C.modoc Have red legs and black bodies just like these queens.

Oh, I now saw that GOCAMPONOTUS said "this is how a BLACK vicinus would look" 

Interesting to know they come in varients.

Definitely modoc. Coloration aside, the head is distinctly broader than vicinus.
