I found this ant colony in a family trip to Grand Canyon, it reminds me of Monomorium minimum.

Sorry for the really bad quality, when I took the photos, I wasn't expecting to post it. I'll try to describe them as best as I can. 

They were quite skittish and small, with slender bodies and black carapace.

Thanks! I think your right, their habitat description fits perfectly to where I found them
