Why do blacklights work so well for queen collection? Also when should I be using my blacklight and what should I expect to get on it in my area this time of year?

Blacklights work so well for catching queens because queens are attracted to light. Regular lights are also ideal for catching queen ants, just as long as they’re pretty bright.
Try and blacklight on really hot days, 80’s-90’s, or if it’s rained before.
May-September are good times to blacklight

Can they see the blacklights better though? is that why people use them over normal lights?

I’m not sure, but that’s probably why people use black lights more than regular lights.

The ultraviolet light mimics the moon and attracts night flying insects of all kinds. In Virginia, black lighting season is beginning now and will run through July. Look in the archives for good tutorial threads on how to set up a blacklight trap.
