Camponotus vicinus and sansabeanus seem to be all I ever find (I'm not complaining, they're both awesome) but just wondering if these indeed are vicinus or something else? They don't seem as big as the vicinus I have and lack some of the red coloring, but I know another similar looking one I found last year was determined to be vicinus. Just wondering if I've found my first non-vicinus haha! What do you all look for when determining vicinus? I know the narrow head is one indicator, but I guess I haven't had enough non-vicinus to appreciate the difference.

Found tonight up Slate Canyon in Provo, Utah.

Try to get more images with brighter lighting, including at least a more straight-on face picture.

Here's a hopefully direct enough front on picture.

I'm seeing a little bit of that red on her thorax once I got her under the photography light.

It appears to be C. vicinus based on the flattened scapes that well surpass the occipital corners and the narrowish triangular head.

Great! Thank you! That was an excellent response. I felt like I learned something and was able to look it up and learn more about what you were talking about. Definitely can see some examples of how they differ in other Camponotus species such as laevissimus.
