I will be starting a journal on my new Camponotus castaneus queen, who I have decided to name Alani. I collected her on 5/27/2024. I will be doing updates every 2 weeks or so unless something super interesting happens.

Currently raising:

Myrmica rubra (1 queen +  ~5 workers)

Lasius niger (single queen + ~90+ workers)

Lasius neoniger (3 single queen + brood)

Formica spp. (Queen [likely parasitic, needs brood])

Formica pacifica (Queen)

Also keeping a friend's tetramorium immigrans for the foreseeable future. Thanks CoffeBlock!

I knew I made this journal too soon, she did really well for the last week, even had a nice little pile of about 8-10 eggs when I checked today except unfortunately she has passed for no apparent reason, no signs of mold or fungus or anything and she had laid eggs so I don't understand.

Castaneus flew last night and will likely fly tonight

Nooo so sad. Perhaps she didn't drink any of the water from her test-tube? or maybe she wasn't fertile, only laying eggs that would become males, which took too much energy. Hope you can find another one sometime soon!
