I found this small colony on my back patio under a cushion. I tried to get them all in a test tube but wasnt sure if I found the queen (one of the ants was holding the brood). Later on I spotted this queen about 20 feet away. I have a few questions.

1 Is there a queen in this small colony?

2 What kind of Queen is this in the photo

3 if they are of the same type of ant should I assume she was their queen and can mix her in

Yeah the first one isn't a queen its just a camponotus worker, in the second picture the one on the top looks maybe a little bigger so it could maybe be the queen? But I'm not sure.

Camponotus planatus is polymorphic, (2nd photo) so I highly doubt that the ant you are talking about is a queen.
Currently keeping
-A. occidentalis
-B. patagonicus
-C. vicinus
-F. neogagates
-M. invidia
-Stennama spec..
I will want to also keep some other lasius types in the future.

The “Camponotus floridanus” is looking a little suspicious. It probably is, but I’m not ruling out discolor. The other picture is C. planatus. There is no queen there.

Ants are small creatures... but together... they can rule the world.

It's definitely floridanus, far too hairy for discolor.
